The Bible clearly teaches that God gave the Sabbath to humanity at Creation. But does the Sabbath apply only to human beings, or do the angels also keep it?
The Bible never directly says, “The angels keep the Sabbath.” Therefore, we should not base that claim on any single Bible verse. However, when we compare Scripture with Scripture, we find strong evidence that the angels live under God’s law, worship Him as Creator, witnessed the creation of this world, and recognize the holiness of the seventh day. The pen of inspiration then confirms what the Bible strongly implies: all heaven keeps the Sabbath.
God’s Law Existed in Heaven
Sin did not begin on this earth. It began in heaven when Lucifer rebelled against God.
Speaking of Lucifer under the symbol of the king of Tyre, the Bible says:
“Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.” Ezekiel 28:15
Lucifer was created perfect, but he chose pride, self-exaltation, and rebellion. He desired the position and worship that belonged only to God.
“For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…. I will be like the most High.” Isaiah 14:13, 14
But how could Lucifer sin if there was no law in heaven? The Bible defines sin clearly:
“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4
Lucifer could not have transgressed God’s law unless that law already existed. His rebellion proves that God’s moral law did not begin at Mount Sinai. It existed in heaven before the creation of this world and formed the foundation of God’s government.
When Lucifer rejected God’s law, he rejected God’s authority and government.
The Angels Obey God’s Commandments
The loyal angels live under God’s authority. They listen to God’s Word and willingly obey His commands.
“Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.” Psalm 103:20
This passage clearly tells us that the angels “do His commandments.” They hear God’s voice and carry out His will.
“Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.” Psalm 103:21
The angels obey God because they love Him, trust Him, and recognize His authority. They find joy in doing His will.
The first four commandments deal with worship and loyalty to God. The angels have no other gods. They do not worship idols or dishonor God’s name. They worship and serve Him with reverence.
Isaiah saw the angels worshipping before God’s throne:
“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 6:3
John also heard the heavenly beings praising God as Creator:
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11
The angels recognize God as the Creator of all things. The Sabbath commandment also directs attention to God as Creator. Therefore, the fourth commandment agrees perfectly with the worship of heaven.
God’s Law Is Recognized in Heaven
John was given a vision of the heavenly temple:
“And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament.” Revelation 11:19
The earthly sanctuary was made according to the pattern of the heavenly sanctuary:
“Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle.” Hebrews 8:5
In the earthly sanctuary, the ark contained the Ten Commandments, which were called God’s testimony. The ark seen in heaven points to the authority of God’s law.
“Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.” Psalm 89:14
Heaven is governed by righteousness. Therefore, the angels do not live independently of God’s law. They live in loving obedience to its eternal principles.
Does “The Sabbath Was Made for Man” Exclude Angels?
Jesus said:
“The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.” Mark 2:27
This verse shows that the Sabbath was given as a blessing to humanity. Human beings need physical rest, spiritual renewal, and time for fellowship with God. However, the verse does not say that only human beings may recognize or observe the Sabbath.
The Sabbath was made for humanity’s benefit, but it remains God’s holy day:
“But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Exodus 20:10
God also calls it “My holy day”:
“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day.” Isaiah 58:13
The Sabbath belongs to God. It bears His blessing, holiness, and authority. Although it was given especially to humanity, it has meaning for every created being who worships God as Creator.
The Sabbath and the Final Test
The final conflict will be between the mark of the beast and the seal of the living God. At its center will be the question of worship and obedience: Will we obey God or follow human authority?
The third angel warns against receiving the mark of the beast:
“If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand.” Revelation 14:9
In contrast, God’s faithful people are described in these words:
“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12
The Sabbath will become the final test of loyalty because it identifies God as the Creator and calls us to obey His authority. If the Sabbath is important enough to become the final test on earth, would it make sense for it to have no place in heaven?
The redeemed will not be alone in heaven. They will live and worship with an innumerable company of angels. It would be difficult to imagine the redeemed keeping the Sabbath while the angels do not recognize it. Heaven is united in worship and obedience; it is not divided between Sabbath keepers and those who disregard the Sabbath.

Angels and the Redeemed Will Worship Together
The Sabbath was established before sin entered this world, and it will continue after sin has been destroyed. Isaiah describes worship in the new earth:
“And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 66:23
The redeemed will not worship separately from the angels. The Bible describes the heavenly Jerusalem as the home of both:
“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels.” Hebrews 12:22
In the new earth, redeemed humanity and the holy angels will be together. It would not be reasonable to believe that the redeemed will gather to worship God from one Sabbath to another while the angels do not. They worship the same Creator, live under the same divine government, and will unite in praising God throughout eternity.
The Pen of Inspiration Gives a Direct Answer
The Bible does not state in one direct verse that angels keep the Sabbath. However, it shows that the angels obey God’s commandments, live under His government, witnessed Creation, and worship Him as Creator.
The pen of inspiration removes all uncertainty by stating:
“All heaven is keeping the Sabbath, but not in a listless, do-nothing way. On this day every energy of the soul should be awake, for are we not to meet with God and with Christ our Saviour? We may behold Him by faith. He is longing to refresh and bless every soul.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 362
The pen of inspiration also says:
“The Sabbath was instituted in Eden before the Fall, and was observed by Adam and Eve, and all the heavenly host. God rested on the seventh day, and blessed and hallowed it. I saw that the Sabbath never will be done away; but that the redeemed saints, and all the angelic host, will observe it in honor of the great Creator to all eternity.” Early Writings, pp. 216, 217
Conclusion
Do angels keep the Sabbath? The Bible strongly indicates that they do. God’s law existed in heaven before sin entered this world. The loyal angels obey His commandments, worship Him as Creator, and live under His righteous government.
The Sabbath will become the final test of loyalty on earth and will continue in the new earth. The redeemed and the angels will not follow different standards of worship. Together, they will keep the Sabbath and honor the great Creator throughout eternity.
