The book of Revelation is a “Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:1). That does not mean that Jesus personally appeared to John but it simply means it is a message revealing Jesus Christ—it’s all about Him!

There are several verses in Revelation that clearly indicates it was the angel who appeared to John giving him the visions of Jesus Christ and heavenly things. The first and the last chapters clearly affirm that fact.

Revelation 1:1 “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John”

Revelation 22:16 “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

Also verses 6 and 8 of the last chapter emphasis this truth repeatedly.

Revelation 22:6 “And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.”

Revelation 22:8 “And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.”

The experience of the vision is so real that it may be hard to make out the difference for the one who saw it. Apostle Paul states this fact to the Corinthian church about one of his visions.

2 Corinthians 12:1-3 “It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)”

Paul found it hard to know the difference—“Whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell”, he said.

Jesus appeared to John, not physically, but in vision, but to John it seemed that Jesus was right there next to him in Patmos speaking and communicating to him about heavenly matters!
