God gave the divine command and also spelt out the consequence of disobedience clearly:

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (Genesis 2:17)

That was clear, “The day that thou eatest thereof”, the very day they would sin, God said, “Thou shalt surely die”.

God is life (see John 14:6). The life of God is His own. He is the source of it. Jesus said:

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself. (John 5:26)

The rest of the creatures have life that is borrowed from God. It is God’s life that sustains all other lives. The very fact that we are alive is because God is alive and is sustaining us all. Jesus our Lord said:

Because I live, ye shall live also. (John 14:19)

Paul tells us it is by the power of God that all our body organs function:

For in him we live, and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28)

The life of God flows to all His creatures. Without God, and a connection to God, there can be no life at all, as all our lives are borrowed from the Source of life.

Sin is dangerous because it cuts off that vital link. It is recorded:

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)

Sin separates the creature from the Creator. And the lifeline that keeps us on is cut off. From the moment they sinned, Adam and Eve had to die, as sin kills. Sin separates that all-important connection. But they did not die at once, not even that day, because, God devised a plan already. That is called grace! And what was the plan for the guilty pair and their children?

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Though God’s Son came only 4000 years later to die for their sins, and ours, on Calvary’s tree, God gave Jesus to humanity much before that. He is called in Revelation:

The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8)

Not that He died at the foundation of the world, but that the plan of salvation was already ready from the beginning, even before the creation of Adam and Eve.

The moment Adam and Eve sinned, the grace of God kept them alive because of the plan of redemption. They could now come back to God because of Jesus Christ. Because of God’s grace through His Son, Adam and Eve did not die the day they sinned, and that is the same reason we are still alive. But the same day they sinned their doom was pronounced that they would die.

The food that we eat, the fruits and other sustaining provisions that we consume, the air that we breathe, the water that we drink, are all because of divine grace. It is all ours because of the shed blood of Calvary! Thank God for our divine Substitute who keeps us going!

(Satan and his evil angels have also sinned, 2 Peter 2:4. But they are kept alive for a different purpose by God. They are “Reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day”, Jude 6. Once the destiny of all mankind is decided in judgment then the wicked angels and the unsaved humans will be destroyed forever. The life of God will be disconnected and they will perish.)
